DMSO sewage cleaning by evaporation

Clean water protection is one of the major priorities of environmental actions in the world. Also in Hungary reservation of potable, unpolluted water base is essential to the inhabitants and agriculture of the country.

The aim of the project is to decrease the volume of the industrial, technical sewage by evaporation. The sewage water containing special solvents etc. can be cleaned by separating water and contaminants by evaporation technology. It results significantly lower amount of hazardous waste, which have to be handled, stored and demolished.

Specially the production of a water filter material creates sewage containing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which cannot be poured into the canal, because it is hazardous waste. It has to be collected and stored in the factory, and later it needs to be transferred and burned in an incinerator.

However the DMSO-water mixture can be separated in one or two steps by a vacuum evaporator. The necessary vacuum for this technology method is 0.3 bars with temperature of 70oC. The resulted outputs are distilled water and industrially clean DMSO.  The investment of this technology would have a short payback time.

The solution method can be universalized for lowering the amount of hazardous waste of semiconductor industry, chemical factories as well. Advantage of the solution is the possibility to recycle, reuse the resulted valuable chemicals.
